Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and his condition is grave, reveals his brother.

Maj Gen (retd) Syed Shafayet Islam made the revelation on Sunday while addressing a meeting on the Jail Killings Day as the chief guest at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj.

“He is severely ill. We are giving more importance to his treatment instead of politics at the moment.”

Former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraf is undergoing treatment at the Critical Care Medicine Unit (CCMU) of the Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand’s Bangkok.

“I have returned from Bangkok three days ago. He did not recognize who I was and that was the case for his daughter as well. His condition is grave” said Maj Gen (retd) Shafayet.

“In this situation, the possibility of him returning to politics is very low,” he said.

He protested against the false propaganda and urged everyone to pray for Syed Ashraf.

He claimed that rumours were swirling and plots were being hatched against his brother.

"We are trying our best to heal him so that he can return to us. My request to you all please do not spread unnecessary rumours about him.”

Syed Ashraf, son of national leader and Bangabandhu’s close associate Syed Nazrul Islam, came forward to steer the Awami League when it plunged into a crisis during the military-controlled caretaker government in 2007.

After working as general secretary of the party in two consecutive terms with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as its chief, he is now a member of the presidium.

The 68-year-old lost his wife Sheila Islam last year.
